Barrister and Solicitor
Shawn works in Labour Relations and Employment Law, primarily for Indigenous education, health care and social services organizations, as well as First Nation governments. He also has a vibrant practice serving not-for-profit organizations in Thunder Bay and northwestern Ontario.
Shawn feels fortunate to have the opportunity to assist organizations and governments in Treaty 9, Treaty 3 and Robinson Superior Treaty territories in their important nation-building work across a variety of sectors. As a former journalist who spent nearly a decade working in the Northwest Territories, northern Alberta and northern Ontario, including as the editor of Wawatay Native Communications Society in Treaty 9 territory, Shawn brings his passion for First Nation-led development of the north to his practice of law.
Shawn was called to the Ontario bar in 2016 after graduating from Lakehead University as part of the Law School’s charter class.
In practice Shawn works with both provincial and federal labour relations regimes, and spends a considerable amount of time dealing with Canada Labour Code issues including unjust dismissal complaints. He tries to bring a collaborative, compassionate approach to handling conflicts, using his training as a journalist to examine all sides of an issue and work to bring differing parties together.
During his personal time Shawn attempts to balance being a father of two young children with volunteering in the community. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Our Kids Count, and a proud Big Brother in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. He has coached the Lakehead Law Kawaskimhon Moot team for the past four years, and tries to help out at the Law School whenever possible. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Friends of Wabikimi. He tries to spend as much time as he can in a canoe, and he's looking forward to the day when his son stops trying to jump over the side of the boat.
